By way of the UK, The Heavy specialize in a dirty, loud mixture of soul, rock & the
blues. They kick off the album with pure garage rock on “Oh No! Not You Again!!”(2)
before pulling a very hip hop move by sampling Jay Hawkins’ classic “I Put a Spell
On You” for the old school “Sixteen”(4). Meanwhile their blues influence comes out
most evidently on “Long Way From Home,”(7) and lead singer Kelvin Swaby even
adopts a slight Jamaican accent for the reggae-tinged “Cause For Alarm”(8). Swaby
has an soulfully appealing voice, captured on a warm, vintage-sounding mic. The
songs aren’t as immediately gripping as those that made up their last release, but
trust me...there’s plenty of fun to be had in The House That Dirt Built.
