Analog Africa is a label dedicated to uncovering previously unheard African funk and
Afro-beat, certainly a worthy endeavor. On this adventure they uncover a tremendously
active but criminally unrecognized group from the small country of Benin: Poly Rythmo
(for short). The group fuses the aforementioned genres with Latin, psychadelic and
traditional Vodoun sounds. This album chronicles their material produced over the
decade of ‘69 to ‘79, primarily recorded in Lagos. From a musical standpoint each of
these songs are amazing. Propulsive drum rhythms, funky guitar solos, pleasant but
powerful singing and chanting are woven together seamlessly. The urgent “Malin Kpon
O” could fill a dance floor in seconds, while songs like “Gan Tche Kpo” take a more
progressive, jam-like approach. No matter what direction the band goes in, they are
FUNKY AS HELL. PLAY THIS!
